Facts about the Portuguese Language
6th Most Spoken Language in the World
Portuguese is a language derived from Latin, and it’s the official language of Portugal, Brazil, Mozambique, Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau and Sao Tome and Principe. It also has a co-official language status in Macau, Equatorial Guinea and East Timor.
The Portuguese language is spread all over the world, since the Portuguese Discoveries, the set of achievements of the old Portuguese Empire in travel and maritime explorations that began in 1415 with the capture of Ceuta in Africa. The findings resulted in the Portuguese expansion and gave an essential contribution to the outline of the map of the world, driven by the search for alternatives to the trade routes in the Mediterranean. With these discoveries the Portuguese began the Age of Discoveries that lasted from the fifteenth to the seventeenth century and contributed largely to the important advances in technology and nautical science, cartography and astronomy, developing the first ships that were able to sail safely on the open sea in the Atlantic.
